Tomo-Kai: The Name and the Logo

Tomo-Kai Logo

While formally known as the University of the Philippines Philippines-Japan Friendship Club, our organization also has a proud and simple moniker in “Tomo-Kai”. What does the name mean? Tomo comes from the Japanese word for “friend”: tomodachi (友達). Kai comes from the Filipino kaibigan, which also means “friend”. Obviously our humble club is all about forming links and making friends, but our name Tomo-Kai also stands for the bridge between these two cultures, which is one of our primary missions.

Our logo also reflects that same philosophy, combining the hiragana characters of To-mo and the baybaying characters of Ka-i, enclosed in a simple black border with the organization name proudly emblazoned on its top and bottom. For more than two decades, this has been our identifying mark.

  1. Can I possibly join the UP Tomo-Kai? I’m not a student of UP. Instead, I’m an engineering graduate from TUP. But I really want to learn more on the Japanese culture. I already know how to read/write in katakana and hiragana, and some few kanji, just studying all by myself. It’s harder though because I never had a proper class training. I dream of continuing my civil engineering masters/doctorate in Japan someday. If I’ll be given the opportunity, I’d like to go to Tokyo Daigaku. but it’s still a long way to go. More power to your organization, and I hope I can be a part of it too. Thank you very much.
