While formally known as the University of the Philippines Philippines-Japan Friendship Club, our organization also has a proud and simple moniker in “Tomo-Kai”. What does the name mean? Tomo comes from the Japanese word for “friend”: tomodachi (友達). Kai comes from the Filipino kaibigan, which also means “friend”. Obviously our humble club is all about forming links and making friends, but our name Tomo-Kai also stands for the bridge between these two cultures, which is one of our primary missions.
Our logo also reflects that same philosophy, combining the hiragana characters of To-mo and the baybaying characters of Ka-i, enclosed in a simple black border with the organization name proudly emblazoned on its top and bottom. For more than two decades, this has been our identifying mark.
